Easy & attractive basket decor

In my last blog post, Simple & functional bathroom decor, I touched on the use of baskets for practical and attractive decor in bathroom spaces but I don’t just use baskets in my bathrooms; I use them all over my house! I love the warmth and texture they add to any room and any decor style, along with their inherent utilitarian benefits. I’ve outlined four of my favorite ways to use baskets in my home below with links to similar products.

First up, and probably the most obvious, pillow & blanket storage…to me, there’s nothing more cozy than a basket full of soft pillows and throws welcoming you to pull them out, snuggle up and stay awhile. Think family movie nights, winter nights by the fire and, if you’re like me, with a serious throw pillow obsession, you can use baskets to display your excess pillows as decor, too!

Secondly, baskets are a great tool for toy storage and organization. Legos, blocks and cars, oh my! Toys can take over a room in no time! We have three kids and our house is very well lived in but I strive to give all the toys a dedicated home when not in use so, at the end of the day, our house doesn’t look like a tornado just blew through it! Another way I love to utilize baskets in my home is for faux greenery and floral containers. Who says you have to use traditional vases all the time? Don’t get me wrong, I use more ordinary vessels too but a combination of materials adds more interest - think glass, crocks, buckets, boxes and baskets. I also adore the color contrast a basket provides against the greenery and/or florals. You can even stick greenery in with the pillows & blankets for a pop of color! Last but not least, I love to use baskets in my home for straight up decor! Whether hung on the wall, stacked on top of each other or part of a vignette, baskets are just plain pretty! The color variation, the texture, the warmth…to me, they are individual works of art that can be combined with other decor or stand on their own.

So where do I find all my baskets, you might be wondering?

  • In addition to baskets handed down to me from family, some of my favorite baskets are from Haiti that I bought from a local craftswoman when I visited there several years ago. Travel destinations are a great place to look for unique pieces.

  • I also have a lot baskets from the usual suspects - Hobby Lobby, TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, The Container Store, etc.

  • In the process of writing this post, I found many beautiful items on Amazon and Wayfair though I would caution you to read the reviews online before ordering since you can’t see the items in person before purchasing.

  • Thrift stores are also a great resource for affordable basket options, like the adorable picnic basket pictured above I picked up for $5.00 at Goodwill!

  • And don’t forget about garage sales, Facebook Marketplace and other similar platforms.

  • You can also find an array of baskets when antiquing and picking. Keep those eyes peeled!

Now I want to hear from you! What’s your favorite way to utilize baskets in your home? Where are your go-to shopping spots to find them? Drop a comment below!
